January 2025 Weather Alert

Published: 03/01/2025

Advice/Actions for Patients due the cold weather alert

As the weather is expected to get worse over the next 8 days this is expected to have severe impacts across health and social care, particularly for people over 65 the very young and those with underlying health conditions.

Advice for patients

Low indoor temperatures can have a serious impact on health, especially if you have a medical condition or are older.

Advise patients on how to keep themselves safe and their home including:

• Try to heat rooms you spend a lot of time in, such as the living room or bedroom, to at least 18°C.

• Try to reduce draughts; you can fit draft excluders around doors cheaply.

• Keep your bedroom windows closed at night.

• Wear several layers of thinner clothing; this could keep you warmer than one thicker layer

• Remember when out and about, wear shoes with good grip to avoid slips and falls on slippery or icy surfaces.
